In 1996, Oregon Public Broadcasting's (OPB) Vice President of Television Programming Tom Doggett, proposed that the University of Oregon (UO) School of Journalism and Communication video production students produce short historical documentaries about Oregon to be aired on OPB. In response, then-visiting professor Dan Miller developed an advanced Documentary Production course. With the help of Michael Majdic, Producer-Director at UO's Media Services, students produced seven productions that aired on OPB the first year. Since then, nearly forty student-produced documentaries have aired on OPB. Two of these have been awarded regional Emmys; four more have received nominations. The addition of an AVID non-linear
editing station made possible through the gift of alumnus Phil Bettens '52
has greatly enhanced the quality of ODP productions. The course is interdisciplinary
and enrolls advanced video production students and selected graduate students
from a variety of disciplines. Further questions, contact Assistant Professor Dan Miller at drmiller@ballmer.uoregon.edu |
